Ecology is indeed an important factor that helps
sustainability and fair use of scarce raw materials and also natural resources
and non renewable energy resources. As a matter of fact, the need to preserve,
protect and perpetrate ecological consideration is at the core of all fashion designing and this must consider and honor fair use of materials and also plans
to reduce environmental pollution as much as possible in as much as fashion
designing is concerned.
As a matter of fact, economic perspective dictates
perspectives of sustainable production and consumption in reduced and less
wasteful production processes.
Sustainable consumption indeed requires three aspects or
factors, viz., consuming in a different manner, which in real terms really
means using environmentally sound, safe and efficient product utilization while
producing the items. Secondly, in terms of responsible consumption, which
means, ensuring that only fair amount and not excessive amount of consumption
processes are used during the production process. Thirdly and finally, the
concept of reduced consumption or consuming less, or progressively reduced
consumption of certain products. Over the years, the fashion industry has
implemented these strategies in diverse ways, but there are reasons to believe
that the third aspect, in terms of reduced consumption, or consuming less, has lost its significance
over time and not many producers pay much attention to the concept of reduced
consumption patterns.
The main thrust areas of sustainable consumption are in
terms of achieving relative importance in terms of ecological and social
impacts, when viewed with regard to current manufacturing situations. Thus, it
is seen in terms of making attempts to improve energy efficiencies in
production processes and to supplant potentially environmentally harmful or
detrimental substances with more Eco friendly and harmonious ones.
Another critical
aspect is in terms of being able to quantitatively assess a consumption level
that seeks to strike the correct balance between preservation of the
environment, on the one hand, and needs of consumers, both current and
prospective on the other. Thus, factors like the quantum of CO2 emissions per
capita/per year does gain credence with regard to these demands on environmental
preservation and protection of fashion products manufacturing companies. While
this is true for other product makers also, the scale, levels and volume of
marked environmental pollution could be much more in case of fashion garments
making businesses, especially carbon footprints and emissions.
Going green is the current fad with regard to ecological
issues in the fashion industry, but first the ecological hot spots need to be
identified and possibly remedied. Since the beginning of the 20th
Century, environmentalists and environmental agencies have tried to pinpoint
the crux of ecological issues in global textile industry. This includes natural
fiber production wherein a great deal of pesticides is used, and wherein water
consumption is considered quite high. In the domain of synthetically developed
fiber production, there is major consumer of scare and nonrenewable energy
sources and textile finishing businesses use a great deal of chemicals in their
businesses, resulting in a great deal of water depletion and also high quantum
of wastewater generated.
All these needs to be curbed controlled and conserved if the
fashion business wishes to produce and harmoniously integrate with nature and
natural ecological environment of which they are an integral and indivisible
part.
Scant respect for environmental concerns does not augur well
for fashion industry and the sooner they realize this truth the better for all
concerned...
