Career Opportunities in Textile Design

The textile industry offers tremendous scope for employment. From the processing of raw materials to the designing of apparel and furnishings the textile industry is a major employer of skilled as well as unskilled labour. Even though the textile industry has been from a historical standpoint one that employs unskilled labour, there are qualified individuals who have been entering the field as well because of the scope that it offers.  Students of textile design after finishing their graduation can easily find employment in the industry within six months. One-third of the students work in the art, design and media sector and 18% of them work as textile or clothing designers. In order to truly understand how a textile mill works students need to gain some experience of having worked in one as a summer vacation or entry level job.

One of the reasons why there has been such an increase in opportunities is because of the change in trends. There are many new technological innovations that are used in the field of fashion technology as well as change in the preference of consumers. ‘Eco fibres’ for instance is a trend of textile technology that has recently been making waves. Concerns about the sustainability of the conventional methods of textile production has led to an effort to move to environmentally sustainable materials like bamboo, hemp, nettles, eucalyptus and coconut fibres.
Even milk protein is used for textile design. This opens up a universe of possibilities for aspiring textile designers. Since use of such material requires research, the career opportunities in textile and fashion also beckons students with majors in chemistry, biology, botany and even physics. This means that career prospects in the field of fashion can even have an impact on students of such subjects in academia that previously had nothing to do with fashion technology.

The fashion industry continues to evolve unlike any other industry. This is because change is so essential to the industry and unless there is constant change in fashion, it will lose its novelty factor. Popular fashion lines can be sold out in a matter of days and it requires successful retailing to change stock accordingly.
Textile manufacturers will need to employ qualified employees that have the ability to manage the supply of raw materials or finished fabric. An efficient supply chain must be maintained by managing the inventory, raw material supply as well as the orders given by the customers. Apart from retail in fashion apparel, a manufacturer may also have customers in the industrial sectors that require a different line of products. Supply management is a job for business graduates and for MBAs with a profound sense of how the fashion industry works.

Textile design is perhaps the most popular field of work within the fashion industry. It is the textile designers that are the artists of the fashion industry. They create the patterns and designs that can be incorporated into the fabrics. They can work in the fashion industry by designing apparel and clothing material and also by creating material for furnishing and interior design.
Fine arts majors are well suited for this job. In order to be successful in the field the candidate must be aware of the modern trends in textile design. A knowledge of computer aided design as well as a good foundation in art and costume history will go a long way. The job requires inspiration and the textile designer can work well if he/she can have an open mind and vision about various design concepts.

Textile design is therefore a field that has a vast scope and requires people from various academic disciplines. Gone are the days when all it required was a basic knowledge of how fabric was made or how it could be tailored. While these two are very important textile design has evolved a lot.
This evolution is one of the reasons why qualified individuals from fields as varied as botany, chemistry, physics, supply management and business management can find employment in the field of fashion design. This is only an indicator of how vast the scope of employment is in the field of fashion design. There is also a very high possibility that, given the rapid nature of change in the fashion industry, even more spheres of academia will be included into the scope for employment in the fashion design industry.
